First lap completed

Well it's taken much longer than I anticipated, despite breaking the back of it during NaNoWrMo back in November, but I have finally finished the first draft of book 4 in the Chronicles of Arkadia series. Unable to go outside due to continuing illness I have been able to sit myself down at the computer and write in short bursts and the old word count has fair zoomed along. In fact the last 4 or 5 chapters have been the easiest to write of the whole book.

So it's done and weighs in at just over 88000 words and now the hard work of editing begins. I'm already aware of several small plot holes that need plugging and because of the change in ending I finally settled on, I'm in for a lot of re-writing. I actually had 6 or 7 potential endings kicking around in my mind dependent on where if anywhere I wanted this series to go next. I have to say that the ending I finally settled on is the best and frankly took me by surprise.  Towards the end of the book I really was just free writing and it was some of the characters who drove the ending not me. I think they made a good choice.

So, what's first? Well I think the first re-write will concentrate on putting a sense of place in the book: smells, sound and noise. I don't tend to add a lot of descriptive writing during the first draft, so this needs putting right first. If I can I'll put some of the plot holes right on this run through as well, but I expect to have to fully correct them on the second re-write. The book will then be put aside for a while before a third run through looks to proofread the copy. Then and only then will I think about sending it to the publisher.

A lot of work? Certainly, but as writers we have a duty to ensure that what we send to be published is the very best we have to offer. The reading public can be unforgiving if they find they've parted with their hard earned cash for a book rife with errors.

I'll be keeping a running note on here as to how the editing progress is coming along, so please pop back when you can for updates. I'l also be Tweeting and providing updates on FB.
