Treading the last miles

Finally started editing Fury of the sword yesterday, but it's slow going, not because the writing's terrible, but because of this wretched heat; I'd rather be writing somewhere cool like the Sahara desert than in my bedroom. So sad to say productivity has been low and I've only managed to edit 21 pages so far, but it's meant to be cooler tomorrow so perhaps I'll have more luck then. On a positive note without sounding arrogant, I was really pleased with the quality of the writing in those first 20 odd pages as very little needed altering, although I did tweak the odd word here and there. The temptation is to try and strengthen verbs and replace adjectives with bigger and better words, but I read a quote somewhere from a writer whose name escapes me now, which said always keep it simple and use small, popular words wherever possible, so that's what I'm going to try and do. My aim is to get the final edit completed by mid-month so I can submit it to my publisher then, but whether that will be possible we'll have to wait and see.

I was well chuffed to receive a couple of excellent reviews in the last week, one for Destiny of the sword on Amazon and the other a review of Redemption of the sword by Spinetinglers Publishing, both of which are greatly appreciated and my heartfelt thanks to both reviewers and indeed everyone else like fellow writer Sam Leeves who have also left great reviews. I've spent a great deal of time this week pimping the reviews around various websites trying to spark some more interest in both books. Strangely although sales of Tales of terror for a dark night are going reasonably well, nobody has yet left a review which is a little disappointing. Maybe in time.

I've only got two short stories entered for writing competitions, which is the lowest ever I think and sadly I just found out a few minutes ago that one of them bottomed out in its competition, not even making the shortlist, which is disappointing, so now I've only got the one. Hopefully when the final edit of Fury of the sword is complete I'll be able to turn my attention to short story writing again for a while.

TV wise absolutely loving The Americans and Falling skies and the countdown is on to the imminent return of Breaking Bad. Man I can't wait for that to return.
